Odaiko New England performs at the Newport Black Ships Festival at the historic Cardine’s Field, one of our biggest performances all year. We’re very pleased to return to Newport’s weekend-long festival celebrating the signing of the Treaty of Kanagawa, which opened the Japanese ports of Shimoda and Hakodate to United States trade. The “Black Ships,” or “Kurofune,” refers to the Japanese term for foreign ships.

Shimoda is now Newport’s sister city and also celebrates this festival.

The Black Ships festival is hosted by the Japan-America Society of Rhode Island.

Fundamentals Taiko Class @ ACAS
Jul 22 @ 6:45 pm – 8:30 pm

In our weekly Taiko Fundamentals class, new drummers learn essential taiko skills such as kata (form), kiai (vocalization) and kumi-daiko (ensemble drumming). Using our entire bodies to learn and play a song, we explore first-hand the mesmerizing, heart-pounding power of taiko while exploring its rich traditions and history. Taiko Fundamentals class is an invigorating experience for body, mind and spirit. No musical experience necessary.

Summer Introductory Shime @ ACAS
Jul 22 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

shime
This summer our 8-10pm class will be focusing on shime, the small tied drum which is usually the highest-pitch instrument in the ensemble. The shime is a very important instrument which often plays the ji or base beat and keeps the whole group together, not unlike a conductor in an orchestra. Our Shime Introductory class will work on the basics of shime technique: proper form for both sitting and standing positions, dynamic range, sound quality, playing with powerful, commanding hits and increased speed. Beginners welcome for our summer session.

Taiko Syles Class @ ACAS
Jul 22 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

In our Taiko Styles Class more experienced taiko players explore several of the taiko styles that form a common bond and language throughout the international taiko community. Taiko Styles Class also continues the tradition of learning and playing taiko songs using kuchi showa.
