Odaiko New England performs at the Newport Black Ships Festival at the historic Cardine’s Field, one of our biggest performances of the year. We’re very pleased to return to Newport’s weekend-long festival celebrating the signing of the Treaty of Kanagawa, which opened the Japanese ports of Shimoda and Hakodate to United States trade. The “Black Ships,” or “Kurofune,” refers to the Japanese term for foreign ships.
Shimoda is now Newport’s sister city and also celebrates this festival.
The Black Ships festival is hosted by the Japan-America Society of Rhode Island.
Bring the kids for the Institute of Contemporary Art’s Play Date: Creating Wonderful Worlds. Once a month the ICA fills with activities for kids and adults to do together and Odaiko New England will be a part of it this July! The event runs from noon to 3pm.
“Admission is FREE for up to 2 adults per family when accompanied by children ages 12 and under. Youth 17 and under are always admitted free to the ICA.”

Registration with the convention is required to attend both the lecture and workshop.

Join Odaiko New England and many other taiko groups in Washington D.C. for the Sakura Taiko Takeover at the Tidal Basin. This year the event will triple the Japanese drumming performances at the National Cherry Blossom Festival to honor the 50th year of taiko in the United States.
The festivities will be On Sunday March 25 from 12 noon to 6pm with taiko all day long. The event is free, but donations will support the groups traveling to the event. For more information, please check the event page.
Join us at Savoy Bookshop and Cafe in Westerly RI for the launch of Jasmine Toguchi: Drummer Girl. There will be a reading, book signing and, since we’ll be there, taiko! The event is from 3-4pm.
